Kumi himo Japanese braids are traditionally made on a stand, or mauri dai. Less expensive cardboard and foam devices are available for use in braiding.
Pictured here are round, spiral, flat, and square braids. Used originally as ties for Samurai warriors' protective gear, they are now a fashion accessory. Traditionally they were braided of many strands of silk.
