Spanish Colonial Weaving is one of my very favorite topics. I have concentrated on jergas and jerga finas. The traditional jerga is woven of a single Churro yarn in a stripe or plaid pattern on a 4 shaft loom. A jerga could be a tarp, a rug, a blanket, a tent and even a garment. It was a true utilitarian textile.
Jerga finas were woven of a finer yarn and often in a Bird's Eye twill on a 4 shaft loom. These items were often used in everyday colonial households.
